Saudi Arabia is embarking on a significant transport sector overhaul, with plans to expand its railway network by over 50% from approximately 5,300 km to more than 8,000 km—and to more than double passenger-handling capacity at its airports. This ambitious strategy, endorsed by the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, aligns with Vision 2030’s goal of transforming the Kingdom into a global logistics hub and increasing the sector’s contribution to GDP.
A key pillar of this initiative is the development of integrated logistics zones, such as the new hub at Jeddah Islamic Port. These zones will seamlessly connect sea, air, and rail networks, including a rail link to King Abdulaziz International Airport that will optimize cargo movement. The government also unveiled a unified digital logistics platform linking customs, ports, airlines, and freight forwarders—already reducing customs clearance times by over 30% and enhancing overall efficiency and multimodal connectivity.
