Airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions are set to undergo major transformation, with a combined investment of US$240 billion from 2025 to 2035. This development includes upgrading existing airports (brownfield projects) and building new ones (greenfield projects) to meet rising passenger and cargo demands. According to the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID), the upgrades will create capacity for an additional 1.24 billion passengers and 71 million tonnes of cargo—a significant boost to regional air travel and logistics infrastructure.

Of the total investment, US$136 billion will modernize existing airports, while US$104 billion will support the construction of new ones. These improvements are projected to drive socio-economic growth by enhancing travel experiences, supporting tourism, facilitating trade, and streamlining supply chains. Leaders at ACI APAC & MID stress the importance of collaboration with governments to support this transformation—calling for more liberalized air transport policies and streamlined visa processes to maximize the impact of these developments.

Looking ahead, the region is expected to handle nearly 11 billion passengers by 2053, up from 3.9 billion in 2024. To ensure financial sustainability, airports will need to balance appropriate infrastructure charges with affordability. At the same time, a strong focus on sustainability and innovation will define the next generation of airports—delivering greener, more connected, and passenger-friendly environments that align with future demands.
